Welcome
Welcome to the website of the Fakenham Choral Society.
We are a community choir based in Fakenham - a living, working, energetic market town in North Norfolk.
We welcome anyone of any age who loves to sing. Our aim is to bring the pleasure of live, large-scale choral music-making
to a wide public. And, of course, to have a wonderful time while we’re doing that.
The choir has 100 members from the town and surrounding villages and we meet to rehearse every Tuesday
evening, from September to June, at the Salvation Army Hall, Oak Street, Fakenham, from 7.30pm to 9pm.
We give a minimum of three concerts a year, usually at Fakenham Parish Church, but we have also sung at
churches in Blakeney, Cley, Wells-next-the-Sea and King’s Lynn. The choir’s repertoire embraces both sacred and
secular music, and we have performed with a succession of distinguished soloists and orchestras.
The choir was founded in 1973 and today is led with great enthusiasm, expertise and flair by Janet Kelsey.
Since Janet became our musical director in 2004, the choir’s reputation has grown considerably. Membership has
increased by a third and at our concerts we invariably perform to enthusiastic full houses.
Recent concert highlights have included the Verdi Requiem, Brahm's German Requiem, Haydn's Nelson Mass, Bach's Magnificat, Mozart's Mass in C Minor, Britten's
Saint Nicolas, Orff's Carmina Burana, Handel's Messiah, an Opera Gala and Songs from the Musicals.
The choral society has in recent years attracted funding from the National Lottery, from its own active
association of Friends and from a network of corporate sponsors pleased to be associated with a successful local
enterprise.
The Tuesday evening rehearsals are challenging, invigorating, informative and, most of all, great fun.
Janet is brilliantly assisted by the choir’s accompanist, Kathleen Wyatt, who amazingly seems to manage to play four,
or eight, parts simultaneously.
Fakenham Choral Society prides itself on providing a warm welcome to all new members so, if you think
you would like to join the choir, do come along and give us a try.
New Musical Director Sought
After six highly successful and happy years, Janet Kelsey has had to give up her position as musical director due to increased work and family
commitments. Fakenham Choral Society is, consequently, seeking a new musical director to take up the post in January 2011. We will be advertising the
job this September, with auditions in October. Anyone wanting further details now, or to receive the information pack, should please email
